Abstract

The extraction of six of the actinide elements from nitric acid solutions by tri-n-octylamine in xylene has been investigated and the effects of acid and amine concentrations have been measured. The extraction of neptunium(IV) and plutonium(IV) was found to be much greater than any of the other oxidation states studied. The application of this property to a separation technique has been suggested. The nitrate complex species predominating in the amine phase has been suggested in the case of the tetravalent ions.
