Abstract

The essay traces the origins of the Economics Graduate Student Organization (EGSO), founded in 1973 in the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. One enduring part of Jack Amariglio’s legacy lies in his contributions to the cofounding of this unique organization, which has waged a successful struggle against scholarly paternalism for half a century through, among other means, its control over the distribution of teaching jobs.
