Abstract

1. A highly developed granular structure was identified in 25 L type cast steel. In the columnar crystal zone the granular pattern occurs independently of the dendritic 2. Tensile and bend test results showed failure of cast specimens along the granular pattern. 3. Heating 25 L steel to 900° C does not eliminate the granular pattern. 4. After normalizing from 1100° C the primary grain boundaries of austenite in the columnar crystal zone disappear whereas in the equiaxed crystal zone they are visible in the form of separate sections. 5. Normalizing from 1100° C and subsequent heat treatment to 900° C improves plasticity and toughness in 25 L steel. The critical cold brittleness temperature drops below −50° C.
