Abstract

Thermal reactions of the products of condensation of dihydric phenols with formaldehyde have been studied. It was found that when the polymers are heated in the region of 120–160° condensation of methylol groups occurs, with formation of dimethylene ether bridges, which decompose in the temperature range of 160–220° with formation of free radicals. Recombination of the radicals results in formation of an infusible, insoluble polymer. At higher temperatures the electrical conductivity of the polymers rises sharply as a result of formation of three dimensional structures. It is shown that polymers with semiconducting properties can be obtained by heat treatment of oligomeric products of condition of dihydric phenols with formaldehyde.
