Abstract
1. 1. The relative composition of the extracellular body fluid free amino acids and the bound (protein) amino acids of the whole body hydrolysate were compared during prolonged starvation. 2. 2. The degree of correlation increased with increasing length of starvation and after 175 days of starvation the two pools were significantly correlated. 3. 3. The results are discussed in terms of the increased importance of protein catabolism during prolonged starvation both as an energy source and as a source of amino acids for protein synthesis.
