Abstract

1. 1. The effect of methanol, formaldehyde, and formic acid on the following enzyme systems has been determined: ( a) the oxidation and fermentation of glucose by yeast, ( b) the oxidation of glucose by rat liver slices, and ( c) the oxidation of ascorbate and succinate by rat liver homogenates. 2. 2. The order of inhibition was formaldehyde formic acid methanol. Formaldehyde was a very potent inhibitor, whereas the other compounds were comparatively weak enzymatic inhibitors. 3. 3. The possible relationship of these enzymatic inhibitors to methanol poisoning is discussed.
