Abstract

Escherichia coli, following x irradiation, showed an inhibition of cell division without complete inhibition of growth. At higher dose-rates there was less growth while at lower dose-rates the inhibition of division lasted longer. Filament formation was also observed when non-irradiated cells were incubated at 15 f C. Desoxyribonucleic acid synthesis was inhibited by x irradiation and was resumed sooner when higher dose-rates were used. A proposed mode of action of irradiation which results in filament formation is discussed. (auth)
