Abstract
SOON after the importance of vitamin B12 was established (Lillie et al., 1949), evidence was presented which indicated that breeding hens required an unidentified factor for normal reproduction (Olcese et al, 1950). Some of the supplements which have been reported to contain the unidentified factor(s) required for normal hatchability are pork liver meal, meat meal, fish meal, dried buttermilk, dried skim milk, meat scraps, dehydrated alfalfa meal, distillers dried solubles, dried whey, condensed fish solubles, and liver “L” (Nestler et al, 1936; Dickens et al, 1941; Atkinson et al, 1951, 1953, 1955b; Couch et al, 1954; Ferguson et al., 1956; and Feldman et al., 1957).Dehydrated alfalfa meal and condensed fish solubles were reported by Atkinson et al (1955a, b) to be required for the maintenance of high fertility in turkeys.The hatchability of turkey eggs from hens fed a diet deficient in vitamin E and unidentified factor sources has…
