Abstract
Abstract SCHILLING and Strong (1955) characterized the toxic principle found in sweet pea seeds (Lathyrus odoratus), which produced lathyrism in rats, as beta (N-gamma-L-glutamyl) aminopropionitrile. Barnett et al. (1957) likened the natural occurring condition of dissecting aneurysms (aortic rupture) in turkeys to the dissecting aneurysms observed in rats following the artificial induction of lathyrism by B-aminoproprionitrile (BAPN) feeding. These later workers demonstrated that levels of 0.0313 and 0.04 percent BAPN incorporated into the feed of day-old poults resulted in death as a result of aortic rupture in 15 percent and 33 percent of the poults prior to 28 days of age. Ringer and Rood (1959) reported that the Broad Breasted Bronze turkey has an extremely high normal blood pressure level and suggested that the hypertension may contribute to field cases of aortic rupture in turkeys. Ringer (1959) postulated that the lowering of blood pressure in the turkey by the use of…
