Abstract
A method of producing a standard amount of primary irritant skin damage or ‘skin insult’ consisting of the use of a 6% solution of Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulphate in a modification of Vermeer’s washing simulator is described. In 22 normal skin sites the mean test response (viz. the difference in TWL before and after applying the skin insult) was 0.056 mg/cm2/h. In a group of 22 patients with contact dermatitis which had been clinically resolved for periods varying from 1 week to 1 year the mean test response was 0.67 mg/cm2/h in the first month after clinical resolution. The raised values in the early weeks following clinical resolution fell to normal with the passage of time, and this period varied from 2–3 months in different subjects. Normal test responses were found after 6 months and a year. It is considered that this test may represent a test of the quality of the water barrier in newly rejuvenated epidermis.
