Abstract
A sensitive probe for label-free intermolecular affinity analysis based on a two-mode interferometric thin-film optical waveguide sensor is presented. The detectability of small changes in molecular surface coverage at the sensor surface is assessed and the experimental resolution of the sensor system is compared to theoretical limitations. Measurements carried out with proteins as analyte molecules demonstrate a detection limit of the affinity sensor in aqueous sample solutions of 2 pg/mm2.
