Abstract

Background: Haemoglobinopathies are autosomal recessive disorders caused by quantitative (thalassaemia) or qualitative (variants) changes in alpha or beta-globin chains due to variants in HBA1, HBA2 and HBB. An effective carrier screening program requires identification of couples at risk of offspring affected by clinically severe disease.
