Abstract
Abstract A molecular orbital theory of the electronic structure of polymer macromolecules is developed and applied to interpret UV photoemission and absorption spectra of polyacetylene, poly(p-phenylene), and poly-pyrrole. The degree of localization of injected charges and excitons in these materials is deduced from spectral measurements and the role of localization in achieving “conducting” polymers by doping is indicated.
