Abstract
A novel hydrogen bond liquid crystal (HBLC) homologous series has been isolated from the combination of 1,2,3,4-butanetetra carboxylic acid (BTCA) and 4-n-alkyloxybenzoic acids (nOBA, n = 4–12). FTIR study confirms the formation of cyclic H-bond of the BTCA + nOBA, HBLC complexes by observing the peak at 3582 cm−1. Induced mesogenic phases, transition temperatures and their enthalpy values are analyzed using POM and DSC. The formation of H-bonds and increasing alkyloxy chain length greatly influence the LC parameters in the title complexes. DFT calculations (HOMO-LUMO, MEP, Mulliken charge and RDG) validate the experimentally observed result.
