Abstract

Providing an in-depth analysis of Cuban comics is not easy: the materials available in the archives are scarce, as are the scientific publications on the subject. However, how do you form a critical theory about Cuban comics? Also, what happens to the genre during the economic crisis? To answer these questions it is necessary to examine the events relating to the magazines published starting from 1959 (year of the Revolution), passing through the crisis of the special period, thus arriving at the 2000s. Founded in 2001, the Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la Historieta is considered in this article to be a valid attempt to structure a link between entertainment and critical production, as well as between Cuban and international comics.
