Abstract
Bis(2-methoxypyridine)cobalt(II) chloride crystallises in space group P2 1 c at room temperature with cell dimensions a = 7.093(2) A ̊ , b = 14.978(3) A ̊ , c = 14.158(1) A ̊ , β = 90.57(2)° and z = 4 . Intensity data were collected by diffractometer to θ = 25° with Mo K α radiation; and with the 1763 significant reflexions, full matrix least squares refinement of all atoms led to R = 0.045. The cobalt atom is tetrahedrally coordinated. The magnetic moment, electronic and vibrational spectra of the compound have been examined and the results accord with the conclusions obtained from the single crystal investigation. The decomposition of bis(2-methoxypyridine)cobalt(II) chloride was studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. Intermediate decomposition products were isolated. These compounds have been characterised by analyses, vibrational and electronic spectra. They have polymeric octahedral structures.
