Abstract

This symposium highlights the most advanced empirical research on context-related global characteristics of effective global leaders. Five empirical studies identified cultural intelligence, global identity and the global competences inventory as important predictors of global leaders behavior in different global work contexts. All these papers searched for context related characteristics, rather than for general characteristics. They all adopt the theoretical framework of the global work context, rather than the cross-cultural context, recognizing that global managers face the challenge of leading teams and units, consisting of members who are culturally diverse and geographically dispersed. The contributions of this symposium are in: enriching the research literature on global leaders, providing empirical evidence to support theoretical concepts of global leaders, highlighting the importance of context-related personal characteristics, and of taking a global context perspective which differs from the cross-cultural perspective on leadership research. The first two studies identify the cultural intelligence and specifically, the meta-cognition factor, as positively influencing the success of global leaders. The third and fourth studies examined the effect of dual global and local identities on leadership of multicultural teams and on favoritism in managers’ allocation decisions to local and global teams. The fifth paper approached the global work context from the perspective of complex environment, and searches for characteristics such as tolerance of ambiguity and cosmopolitanism, as potential facilitators of adaptation to the complex, dynamic global environment.
