Abstract

Abstract The constitution of the RuRh system was investigated between 900 and 2300 °C using metallography, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, electron microprobe analysis and microhardness measurements. The system is of the simple peritectic type with a peritectic temperature of 2090 °C and a peritectic composition of about 70 at.% Rh. Intermetallic phases were not observed. The maximum solubility of rhodium in ruthenium is 60.0 at.%, and that of ruthenium in rhodium is 34.5 at.%. The lattice parameter c and the c a ratio increase with increasing rhodium content in the h.c.p. ϵ-Ru(Rh) solid solution, whereas the lattice parameter a in the f.c.c. α-Rh(Ru) solid solution is only slightly changed. Microhardness measurements in the α-Rh(Ru) solid solution reveal a rapid increase with increasing ruthenium content; microhardness changes in the ϵ-Ru(Rh) solid solution are insignificant.
