Abstract

Planetary boundaries are upper tolerable limits for man-induced changes in the functioning of the planet Earth. Planetary boundaries are ‘limits to growth’ but rather in functional terms than in terms of resource-sufficiency, even if often caused by excessive resource use. Planetary boundaries quantify the safe ecological space for humans, but do not take position to social sustainability such as food, energy or water security. Equal redistribution of food and resources facilitates the return to the planetary boundaries. Many more changes are required in the world food system to secure food for all within the safe and just space for humanity.
