Abstract

The effects of combined treatment regimes with high energy shock waves and anticancer drugs or cytokines on bladder cancer cell lines were examined in vitro. From the proliferation of cells after treatment, shock wave enhancement ratios were calculated for characterising the drug sensitisation by shock wave pretreatment. It was found that there are treatment modalities that render cells more susceptible for subsequent drug exposure. From the results it is concluded that transient membrane permeabilisation is a major damaging effect which contributes to an increased drug efficiency.
