Abstract
There is an increasing need to realize very high speed MUX and DEMUX circuits based on CML and ECL principles. The heart of this type of circuits is the bipolar current switch. The bipolar current switch has two steady-states, that is the current I0 of a current source flows ideally either through Q1 or Q2 depending on the input signals. In order to have a fast and reliable that is robust circuit behaviour some overdrive at the inputs is necessary; therefore the circuit behaves strongly nonlinear. The dynamic behaviour of the current switch is discussed for the idealized model of the bipolar transistor that is only the mobile charge in the forward active region is considered whereas the charges in the collector–base and emitter–base depletion regions are neglected [1–3].
