Abstract

The economic development of the vast region traversed by the Baikal—Amur Main Railway Line is a problem that already has a century-long history. Research on the construction of a railroad to the north of Lake Baikal had been carried out since the end of the last century practically simultaneously with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The new railroad reduced both the distance (by 488 kilometers) and the time (by approximately 11 days) of freight shipments to Pacific Coast ports. The first design of the western stretch of track from Taishet to Ust'-Kut was prepared in 1914, but its construction could not commence because of World War I.
