Abstract
No evidence could be found supporting the hypothesis that the gross structure of the mandible corresponds to reinforced concrete: the dark band (= reinforcing rod) is composed of blood vessels and nerves. The arrangement of bony material in the mandible is alined along the trajectorial pattern of stresses within this structural element. Basically the mandible is a flexible I·beam with massive bony tissue at the dorsal and ventral edges of the ramus which resists forces in the dorsoventral plane, but is flexible in the lateromedial plane. The hollow center and the mandibular fossa are regions of low stress within the lower jaw. The trabeculae within the central hollow brace the walls from collapsing inward, but do not appear to lie along the trajectorial lines of force.
