Abstract

The reaction 19F(d, α) 17O has been studied in the deuteron energy range from 0.9 to 4.25 MeV. Angular distributions and excitation functions were obtained for the alpha-particle groups leading to the five lowest states of 17O. The 2 I+1 rule was examined; good agreement with theory was obtained except near thresholds for other reactions. The intercept of the 2 I+1 line with the ordinate was analysed theoretically. It was found that the ratio of the gradient to the intercept of the 2 I+1 line is equal to 1 (2i+1) , where i is the spin of the incident particle. Some evidence of interference between the compound nuclear and direct reaction mechanism was found in the excitation function for the α 2 group.
