Abstract
In 1957 a construction crew in Thanh Hoá Province discovered a brick tomb dating from the late second or early third centuries CE. Local villagers looted it, looking for gold. Simultaneously, an entrepreneur persuaded provincial authorities to permit him to dig for gold on a mountain and to share what he found with them. The discovery of another ancient tomb added to rumors about finding gold in old tombs that spread over several provinces. A government investigation produced a campaign to stop the looting of old tombs, the training of professional archaeologists, and the formation of the Institute of Archaeology.
