Abstract
New equiatomic ternary hafnium-transition metal (T ) suicides were synthesized and structurally analysed either by powder diffraction photographs or, in the case of HfMoSi and HfRhSi, by refining single-crystal diffraction data. The hexagonal ZrNiAl type, an Fe 2P-type substitution derivative, was found for HfReSi, and the orthorhombic TiFeSi type, a deformation variant of the ZrNiAl type, for HfRuSi and HfOsSi. The other investigated HfTSi compounds ( T Mo, W, Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt) crystallize with the orthorhombic TiNiSi type, a PbCl 2-type substitution derivative. Single-crystal X-ray data (Mo Kα radiation) are reported for the following compounds with orthorhombic TiNiSi type ( oP12, Pnma-c 3 , Z = 4): (1) HfMoSi, a = 6.932(1), b = 3.5052(6), c = 8.196(2) A ̊ , V = 199.15(5) A ̊ 3 , Dx = 10.09 mg mm −3, wR = 0.045 for 268 contributing unique reflections; (2) HfRhSi, a = 6.480(1), b = 3.9069(8), c = 7.411(1) A ̊ , V = 187.60(4) A ̊ 3 , Dx = 10.956 mg mm −3, wR = 0.035 for 291 contributing unique reflections.
