Abstract

The effect of temperature on the dynamic shear properties of an epoxy resin and its carbon fibre-reinforced composite was studied by testing rectangular specimens in a free-torsion pendulum over the temperature range −100 to +200°C. The results for shear moduli demonstrated the effectiveness of the method for generating reliable and consistent data for uniaxial and biaxial reinforced CFRP. Comparison of the damping properties of the bulk resin with that of the CFRP composites, indicated that the glass transition temperature of the reinforced material was approximately 20°C below that of the matrix and was independent of laminae orientation. The damping properties did not follow the expected relationship, ie the stiffer the laminate, the lower is its damping property.
