Abstract
Marine tropical algae and two marine tropical phanerogams were exposed for 12 hours to either highered or lowered temperatures. After following the photosynthetic or respiratory rates were measured in the normal temperature of 25° C of the ambient habitat. All algae investigated show their temperature resistance between 34 and 36° C. The influence of 38° C could not be tolerated neither from the algae nor the phanerogams. The tolerance of temperature in the two marine vascular plants Thalassia testudinum and Halophila decipiens was found to be between 32,5° C and 34° C. As a general rule the photosyntetic system is less resistant against rised temperatures than the respiratory apparatus. Lowered temperatures of 8-10°C were tolerated without damages not only in the algae Chaetomorpha media, Grateloupia cuneifolia, G. filicina and Padina vickersiae, but also in both phanerogams as their were Thalassia testudinum and Halophila decipiens.
