Abstract

Occupational health nurse practitioners need to support self-determined health decisions and behavior change for weight loss. This article describes a telephone-based health and wellness coaching intervention. A mixed methods single-case study approach was used. Nine coaching conversations were analyzed using the self-determination theory as an underpinning theoretical framework. Health-related quality of life improved, and there was a 4.46% reduction in body weight. Three main themes emerged from the coaching conversations: owning goals (desired outcomes and motivation to change, setting SMART [Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound] goals, and behavior strategies), accountability (self-monitoring behavior and outcomes), and support (realizing perceived barriers and enablers).
