Abstract
In this activity, we present Latina/x critical communication theory, a model of theorizing that argues for centralizing Latina/xs into communication studies in an empowering, liberatory approach that promotes awareness of social justice and critical thinking. We then feature a pedagogical activity that allows students a foundation for conceptualizing a decolonial approach to history that recognizes the contributions of Latina/xs and challenges anti-Latinx immigrant discourse—a body of knowledge that can be put into practice by communication studies scholars. Courses: Communication Theory, Media, and Diversity courses; Intercultural Communication. Objectives: In this single-class activity, students will (1) identify the tenets of Latina/x critical communication theory; (2) contextualize the present sociopolitical climate for Latina/xs in the U.S. within their historical record in the U.S.; (3) compare media texts and critique media representations in the politics of immigration; and (4) write self-reflection about media-informed perceptions of Latina/xs.
