Abstract

This chapter describes the historical development and current status of teaching in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in France. It provides a profile of teachers and lecturers and their educational practices. The authors begin with a brief description of the current TVET system. They then provide historical background to demonstrate the institutional and pedagogical foundations upon which TVET teaching developed from the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. The progressive and conflicting assimilation of this group of teachers into the general body of secondary education teachers is examined, outlining the consequences in terms of the social constitution of the group and pedagogical practice. The current situation of TVET teachers, their training and recruitment is described and the final section of the chapter presents new challenges posed by the practice of alternated training between school and workplace, the development of continuing education for adults, and the move in France towards other European training models.
