Abstract

Eubotrys includes E. racemosa and E. recurva, and these species form a southern Appalachian - southeastern Coastal Plain species pair. Generic autapomorphies include deciduous leaves with unicellular hairs on the lamina both adaxially and abaxially, megagametophytes with antipodals dividing, and quickly deciduous inflorescence bracts that are photosynthetic and elongate but not equivalent to leaves. The Eubotrys clade is sister to Chamaedaphne, with which it shares the apomorphies of fall-formed inflorescences of the E. racemosa type, staminal filaments that are merely papillose, placentas with a bare spot adaxially, and campylotropous ovules. Eubotrys is thus generically distinct from Leucothoe sensu stricto and Eubotryoides grayana. Species descriptions, nomenclatural information, specimen citations, and eco-geographical characterizations for these two species are presented, along with an identification key.
