Abstract

The foundation experience obtained from over 500 oil storage tanks constructed in Eastern Venezuela is presented in summary form. The 20 yr settlement record of a twenty-eight-tank terminal constructed on soft clay soils is given. It is observed that large steel storage tanks can be successfully operated with shell settlements as large as 3 ft and bottom settlements as much as 2 ft greater than those of the shell.
