Abstract

Coefficients of passive earth pressure have been compared using the method of slices employed in slope stability work. The common problem of a vertical wall pushing into sand with a horizontal surface has been investigated. The computed values compare more favorably with experimental findings for dense sand than do previous theories. The method is simple and may be extended to problems involving sloping backfill and surcharge loading.
