Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the talk on the Caribbean plant protection commission. The Caribbean Plant Protection Commission was established by the 48th Session of the FAO Council in 1967 through Resolution No. 8/48. The need for such a commission was first emphasized by the Second Meeting of the Caribbean Food Crops Society held in Barbados in October, 1964, which adopted a resolution to request FAO to provide assistance in this regard. The First Session of the Caribbean Plant Protection Commission was convened at Paramaribo, Suriname, from July 15–22, 1968. The delegates to the First Session agreed that the specific problems concerning plant quarantine existed in all member countries. The specific quarantine measures suggested by the delegates needed to resolve existing problems involved preparing new or revision of existing, plant quarantine legislation, and its maintenance on an up-to-date basis and implementing approved procedures for boarding and inspecting air and land carriers.
