Abstract

This article delves into Guru Gobind Singh's stay at Damdama Sahib and his activities during this period, including: the finalization of the Sikh scripture that came to be known as the Damdami Bir; establishment of the Guru ki Kanshi and the Damdama school of Sikh exegesis; framing of rules for the performance of Akand-paaths (non-stop recitations of the Guru Granth Sahib); the establishment of the Guru's court and arranging of literary and marshal meetings; other measures to disseminate Sikhism; and the physical development of the town of Damdama Sahib under Baba Deep Singh (whose own literary and marshal accomplishments will also be discussed). The article also examines the deterioration of the honour and prestige of the Takhat during its management under the chief of Shahzadpur, its role in the socio-religious and political affairs of the Sikhs, and the restoration of the status of Takhat Damdama Sahib by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
