Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper sheds light on the economic aspect of Kashmir under Sikh rule with the main focus being on the taxation system. The banking and taxation mechanism that ran in Kashmir was unique compared to the rest of India. Different weights and measures, land measuring instruments that were in vogue have also been studied. Apart from this, an attempt has been made to study the coins and currencies that were in use at that time. Moreover, an attempt has been made to bring forward the role of money lenders, their exorbitant interest rates and the deplorable conditions of the peasants.
