Abstract

Tashkent, one of the most strategic regions of Turkestan, has been the subject of struggle between Khiva and Bukhara Khanates throughout history. Because of its strategic position, Tashkent was also one of the main objectives of Russian Tsarism, which had an expansionist policy over the Turkestan Khanates. Russian Tsarism, which wanted to explore the region and explore its resources, sent embassy missions consisting of many experts. The mine engineer Timofey Stepanoviç Burnasev, who was sent to Turkistan in 1794 by the tsarist administration, wanted to contact Tashkent rather than the Khanates of Turkestan, in accordance with the instructions given to him. However, the Bukhara Khanate prevented this first official Tsarism attempt. The Russian government continued its efforts to establish links with Tashkent which was a city-state. Thus, a new embassy mission was sent to Tashkent. In this study, the contacts of the first Russian ambassador Dmitriy Telyatknikov, who was able to establish contact with Tashkent Khanate in 1797 during the short period of independence of Yunus Hoca (1780-1800), is discussed. In addition, the contributions of the ambassador’s impressions and information about Tashkent to Russian expansionism in the region are the main subject of this study.
