Abstract

In order to provide an explanation of analyses from previous chapters, this chapter provides a general overview and interpretation. Simultaneously, this overview represents a continuation of Chap. 2 , because it discusses the further development of the Byzantine military forces after 1081. The years of continuous warfare had undeniable effects on the Byzantine army and navy, and provoked many crucial changes. Further, the pivotal role of Alexios I Komnenos as the supreme military commander is examined and the quality of his military leadership is discussed, leading to the conclusion that this Byzantine emperor was indeed a capable military commander, and without his skills and talents the fate of Byzantium during the late eleventh century would have been much worse.
