Abstract

A new epoxy resin containing an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl group in the main chain was synthesized by solution polycondensation of 3-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl) propenone with epichlorohydrin. The synthesized epoxy resin was characterized systematically by Fourier transform infrared, 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. The thermogravimetric analysis data revealed that the resin was stable up to 320 °C. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyze the curing kinetics of the epoxy resin. The activation energy for the curing of the resin was estimated using both Arrhenius and Kissinger methods and the values obtained were 156 and 142 kJ mol−1, respectively.
