Abstract

Silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction at different concentration of AgNO3 (Ag1, Ag2, Ag3, Ag4) in Poly-vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) solution. From XRD analysis the average grain size of silver nanoparticles was observed to be ~ 2 nm. FTIR analysis confirmed the PVP polymer bonds with silver nanoparticles. UV absorption spectra for four different compositions of PVP capped silver nanoparticle was measured in the range between 300 nm and 700 nm. The emission behavior of the PVP capped Ag nanoparticles thin film showed mainly two peaks, the first located between 370 and 380 nm, the second between 480 and 500 nm. The strong broad PL emission for silver nanoparticles undergoes a blue shift from 420 nm to 370–380 nm for all the samples. The bacterial cytotoxicity test using E. coli bacteria in PVP capped silver nanoparticles resulted in higher antibacterial properties. The experiments suggest the possibility of the use of this material in drinking water purification, air filtration, domestic and Industrial air quality management, antibacterial packaging, etc.
