Abstract

Synergism is defined as “the co-operative action of two components of a mixture such that the total effect is greater than the sum of the effects of the components used independently”. Mechanisms known to be involved in herbicide synergism are increased uptake and mobility and decreased detoxification. These offer direct approaches to overcoming some types of herbicide resistance, notably that due to enhanced degradation. Weeds with this latter form of resistance, such as chlorotoluron-resistant Alopecurus myosuroides, are often cross-resistant to herbicides with other modes of action, and this seriously limits treatment options.
