Abstract

By using 233U the solvent extraction of uranium(VI) from nitric acid into mixtures of 1,1,1-trifluoro-3-2′-thenoylacetone (TTA) and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) or tri-n-butyl phosphine oxide (TBPO) in cyclohexane has been studied. The extraction coefficient has been found to be greater for such mixtures than for either component alone, the maximum enhancement in extraction being of the order of 10 3 and 10 4 respectively. The formulae of the extracted species have been shown to be UO 2X 2, TBP and UO 2X 2. 3TBPO (HX = TTA) and their mixed equilibrium constants calculated. The general problem of synergism in the solvent extraction of metal complexes has been discussed.
