Abstract

Concepts of sustainability have emerged over the last two years as a prominent influence in Britain on national policy for rural tourism. This recent change reflects the rapidly rising public awareness of environmental issues and the growing number and power of environmentally conscious consumers in Britain. As public attitudes have shifted the national organisations involved with rural tourism have looked to ideas of sustainability which became more widely appreciated with the 1987 report of the United Nations Commission on Environment and Development, the Brundtland Report. How in Britain has rural tourism policy been integrated with concepts of sustainability?
