Abstract

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc, popularly known as disc herniation, is characterized by calcification of the cartilaginous tissue originating from the nucleus pulposus or by bone metaplasia that extends to the fibrous ring, which may rupture and compress the bone marrow. The main clinical signs are cervical hyperpathy, ataxia, intense pain, muscle fasciculations and loss of proprioception in the limbs. Diagnosis is made through tomography or magnetic resonance imaging tests. There are two lines of treatment, conservative and surgical. The object of this work is to present a case report of intervertebral disc degeneration in a 6-year-old French bulldog dog, presenting a high degree of pain, surgical treatment performed using the ventral slot technique.
