Abstract

Intestinal parasitic infections are one of the main debilitating conditions that affect horses. Grazing, natural habits, breeding methods and the unrestrained use of dewormers favor the development of parasites, make their control difficult and cause parasite resistance to commonly used active ingredients. Parasites, in addition to causing economic losses directly related to pathologies and clinical manifestations such as reduced performance and development of the affected animals, can favor the development of other conditions such as colic syndrome, among others. Among the species that affect the equines, the most prominent parasite is Strongylus vulgaris, which, during its evolutionary cycle, migrates through the animal’s body through blood vessels, and can affect different systems, explaining its important pathogenesis. The formation of thrombi in important vessels within the organism of parasitized animals is notable, which is sufficient for the development of other pathologies.
