Abstract

In the present study, a nickel-based powder, which is extensively utilized in aero-engine applications, was utilized in direct metal laser sintering operation to investigate the surface topography of additively manufactured products. Laser power, scanning speed and layer thickness were used as variable in the process and the role of each variable was investigated considering surface parameters such as surface roughness and waviness. In order to determine the surface parameters, 2D profile topography and 3D areal topography measurements were carried out from the product surfaces. According to the results, surface quality is improved increasing laser power while reducing scanning speed and layer thickness. In addition, 2D measurements predict the surface parameters lower than 3D measurements because profile topography considers only a limited number of sections from the surface however, areal topography includes all points on the surface while calculating the surface parameters.
