Abstract

Enucleation (removal of an eye) is one of the most common treatment modalities for retinoblastoma. There is very little research into the impact of this type of treatment on the child and their family; however, it is thought to be a life-changing event. The Royal London Hospital retinoblastoma service has developed a model of care to support families during this time. Adequate support before and after enucleation is crucial in helping to decrease psychological trauma and increase acceptance and coping. This article will outline the model of care and supportive teaching materials that the multidisciplinary team use to help this patient group through enucleation surgery and at different points in the child's development.
