Abstract
The 64th Annual meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Surgery was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 19–21. This meeting marked the first return of the AAP to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the hospitality shown by the Crescent City was outstanding. This meeting featured excellent presentations, invited speakers, and keynote addresses that will inspire continued participation in this annual event and solidify the important role that the AAP has for its surgical colleagues. Highlights of the meeting included Professor Lewis Spitz, London, UK, being awarded the William E. Ladd Medal, the Arnold Salzberg Mentorship Award given to Jay L. Grosfeld, MD, Indianapolis, IN, and the Stephen L. Gans Distinguished Overseas lectureship delivered by Mark D. Stringer MS, FRCP, FRCS, of Dunedin, New Zealand. The 2012 Rosenkrantz Awards to trainees were decided by the Program and Executive Committee members. The Basic Science award went to Mika Matthews, MD, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH, for her work entitled “HB-EGF Protects the Intestine from Radiation Therapy Induced Intestinal Injury”. The Clinical Research Award went to Kyle Van Arendonk, MD, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD for his work, “Living Unrelated Kidney Transplantation: A Good Match for the Pediatric Candidate”, and the Best Poster was awarded to Eveline Shue, MD, University of California at San Francisco, for her work on
