Abstract

The successive decay of the pyroelectric properties of strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystals has been observed for more than a hundred thermal circles of heating and cooling. The decay showed that the peak of pyroelectric coefficients of the crystals in phase transition region decreased by orders of magnitude and another peak at about 50°C grew up gradually with increasing circle times. However the dielectric behaviour showed no change. The pyroelectric behaviour of the repolarized samples can return to its original state. The results indicate that both the decreasing of pyroelectric peak in phase transition region and the appearing and increasing of the peak at about 50°C are due to the multidomain and fatigue effect.
